A lot of people hear “no exam” and immediately picture life insurance rolling out a red carpet. No needles, no nurse, no questions, just approval by vibes. Lisa and Eric are here to lovingly pop that bubble.

In this episode, they break down why no exam does not mean no underwriting, why the insurance company still knows about that refill you picked up Tuesday, and why the convenience route can actually cost more. They tackle the biggest myths, explain what really happens behind the scenes, and reveal the surprising reason doing the exam can sometimes save you real money.

Whether you’re team “please don’t send a nurse to my house” or team “just tell me the cheapest option,” this episode finally makes the whole thing make sense, and makes you laugh while it does.

Join us each week as we break down life insurance without the headaches, the lectures, or the awkward sales talk.

We’ve spent decades helping families find affordable coverage, even when life’s not picture-perfect. On meds? Carrying a few extra pounds? Managing a health condition or two? You’re not alone, and you’ve still got options.

Lisa

Have you noticed everyone's suddenly obsessed with no exam life insurance? Like it's the Costco sample of policies. No needles, no nurse, no problem.

Eric

Yeah, people hear no exam and think they're getting some kind of VIP shortcut. Like the TSA pre-check of life insurance. Just glide on through while everyone else is taking off their shoes.

Lisa

Right. Except that's not actually how this works.

Eric

Spoiler, no exam doesn't mean no underwriting. They're not just going to take your word for it that you're a marathon-running superhuman who only eats kale. Especially if your last checkup involved a conversation about blood sugar, blood pressure, or that doctor who keeps saying, we need to talk about your A1C.

Lisa

And yet so many people think that. We get callers who say, I want the no exam one so they don't ask questions. Like it's a secret menu at In N Out.

Eric

Double double, hold the underwriting. We had one guy convinced that if he skipped the exam, nobody would notice he was on meds for type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.

Lisa

Exactly. So today we're breaking down what no exam really is, what it isn't, and why sometimes the thing you're trying to avoid, needles, nurses, the whole circus, actually gets you a better rate.

Eric

And if you're over 50, carrying a few extra pounds, or managing diabetes or blood pressure meds, this episode is definitely for you. Big Lou's like you, not perfect on paper, and not exactly volunteering for extra needles.

Lisa

Welcome back to the Big Lou podcast. I'm Lisa.

Eric

And I'm Eric, ready to rescue you from another round of life insurance confusion. Today's topic, no exam versus no underwriting, also known as, wait, aren't those the same thing?

Lisa

They're not the same thing, not even close.

Eric

But people swear they are. I had a guy tell me, I want the no exam one because I don't want anyone digging into my medical stuff. Sir, you're on diabetes medication. They're definitely digging.

Lisa

They're just not sending someone to your house with a lab kit and a clipboard. There's still underwriting happening in the background. They're checking prescriptions, doctor visits, all of it.

Eric

Yeah, they've got receipts. They know you picked up that metformin refill on Tuesday.

Lisa

All right, let's talk about what no exam actually is, because it sounds dreamy. No nurse, no needles, nobody showing up at your house while you're still in your pajamas.

Eric

Yeah, the whole vibe is stay on your couch, we've got this.

Lisa

And you do avoid the in-person medical exam. But the company is still looking at your real health profile. Prescriptions, labs your doctor already has, notes about your blood pressure, your A1C trends.

Eric

They're basically running a Carfax report on your body. Hmm. Looks like a couple of recalls and a check engine light.

Lisa

Exactly. And here's the kicker. Your rate is based on that information. Just because there's no nurse taking your blood pressure doesn't mean the insurance company assumes you're in Olympic shape.

Eric

If anything, they assume the opposite. When they don't have fresh data, they build in a cushion. Translation, convenience costs money. Like airport snacks, but more painful.

Lisa

This is especially true if you're overweight or managing type 2 diabetes. Because without an exam, the insurer has to guess. And their guesses aren't generous.

Eric

Alright, myth time. Myth number one, no exam means no underwriting. That's like saying skipping the gym still gives you abs.

Lisa

They're reviewing your health. You're just not peeing in a cup for a stranger.

Eric

Myth number two, no exam is cheaper. Not usually if you're over 50 on meds. Or your doctor's been giving you side eye about cholesterol or A1C.

Lisa

Fresh numbers help a lot of people, especially folks with controlled diabetes, decent blood pressure, or weight that's trending better than their older medical records show.

Eric

Myth number three, no exam is always faster. If your medical records take a minute to track down, yeah, not so fast.

Lisa

Myth number four, if I do the exam, they'll find something bad. Most people actually save money when they do the exam because the data shows the real picture instead of worst-case assumptions.

Eric

Here's something most people don't realize. Half the guys we talk to are on something. Diabetes meds, blood pressure meds, cholesterol meds. That doesn't make you high risk. It just makes you over 50.

Lisa

We had a caller whose no exam quote was higher because the insurer assumed his diabetes was poorly controlled. He did the exam, his A1C came back better than expected, and his rate dropped.

Eric

Same guy, same meds, just better information.

Lisa

No exam is great for some people, but if you've got weight concerns, diabetes, or a mix of meds, Big Lou can match you to the company that treats you the fairest.

Eric

Some carriers love no exam cases. Others give better pricing only when they see your actual numbers. Big Lou knows which is which.

Lisa

No judgment, no pressure, no lecture about your blood sugar.

Eric

Just someone who gets your health profile and finds the path that saves you money.

Lisa

No exam is convenient. It's just not magic. And sometimes the thing you're avoiding, the exam, is the thing that saves you real money.

Eric

Especially if you're trying to protect your family and not overpay because of assumptions about weight or diabetes.

Lisa

If this episode helped, hit follow so you don't miss the next one.

Eric

And if you're 50 plus, on meds, managing diabetes, or carrying a few extra pounds, talk to the Big Lou team. No shame, no guilt trip. Just a real conversation about what actually fits you.

Lisa

Thanks for listening. See you next time.
